Register to Vote in the 2020 Election!

Exercise your civic duty to vote in the upcoming 2020 election! Here's some basic information on how to vote in California!

Who can vote?

All U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 years of age by Election Day (November 3, 2020) are able to vote.

Do you need to register to vote?

Yes, the deadline to register to vote is October 19, 2020. Paper registrations should be postmarked by this date and online registration should be completed by this date. Forgot to register? You can still register to vote following that date, but it will be considered a conditional registration. Visit https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration/same-day-reg/ for more information on conditional voter registration.

How do you register to vote?

It's as easy as clicking this button (and following the instructions on the page)!

Don't think you have the time to vote?

You can vote by mail! Simply pick that option when registering to vote. You can mail your vote by mail ballot directly or drop it off at your nearest polling station. Mail in ballots must be postmarked by election day. Want to vote in person? Your employer is legally required to give you time off to vote (though it probably will not be paid!). Other specificities may apply. Make sure to check with your employer. See https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/time-vote-notices/ for more information.

Vote by mail? But I don't own envelopes or stamps

Stamps and envelopes are not necessary for mail in votes. You will be sent everything you need to vote! Voting is absolutely free!

My vote by mail ballot never came or I received a mail in ballot, but want to vote at a polling station instead. What do I do?

If you received a vote by mail ballot, you can bring it to your polling place and surrender it in order to vote at a polling station. If your mail in ballot got lost, you can still vote at a polling place, but your ballot will be provisional.

What is a polling place and where do I find it?

Your polling place is the place or places where you are assigned to vote based on your residence. You must vote at this polling place if you are voting in person. You ca find your polling place by visiting this link https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place/

When does my polling place open?

Most polling places open October 30th until election day, but some open as early as October 24th. Polling centers will be open from 10 AM - 7 PM each day except on election day when they will be open from 7 AM-8 PM. What do I need to bring to a polling place?

Bring a valid ID like your California State driver's license!

I am out of state temporarily (think college). Can I still vote in the election for my home state?

Yes, you can request an absentee ballot to vote by mail.

How can I vote? I don't know anything about politics. There's so much information, I don't even know where to start!

The Voter Information Guide can be a huge help when trying to understand the stances of each candidate. You can find it at https://voterguide.sos.ca.gov/

Need a voter guide in a different language? Here are some in the languages of our different Pacific Islander communities:

The voter guides below are the CA NHPI voter guides created by members of the Pacific Islander community in California. They are being shared as a resource by HDG to help encourage all those who can to vote. The viewpoints and positions expressed in these guides do not necessarily reflect the positions of HDG 501(c)(3) nor that of its members. Sharing this resource should not be equated with HDG's public backing of any California proposition.
